Say “Hello” to our Little Friend: Cold Laser Therapy
At Rice Family Chiropractic we’re excited to now be providing Cold Laser Therapy (CLT) to our patients as an additional treatment option that has been shown to greatly help eliminate pain, reduce inflammation and accelerate tissue healing. If it sounds somewhat sci-fi, it’s really not.
Cold Laser Therapy is simply “treatment with light” and has been in existence since at least 1500 BC. Indian medical literature describes combining herbs with natural sunlight to treat non-pigmented skin areas, known today as vitiligo. Buddhist literature from 200 AD and 10th century Chinese documents also make references to similar treatments.
As an analogy, just like the abacus eventually evolved into the computer, which has fundamentally changed the way humans live and work in today’s society, light therapy, using research from 3500 years ago, has evolved into CLT systems capable of delivering laser light at specific wavelengths (or colours) and power levels to heal numerous nerve, muscle and joint conditions.
With thousands of studies available on the subject, laser therapy has grown into a widely accepted form of treatment. Cold Laser Therapy has even grown beyond the medical setting and into the world of sports. Currently, all major league baseball teams and many NBA, NFL, and NHL teams use CLT.
As advancements in CLT technology have continued, millions of healthcare practitioners now rely on CLT systems daily in their clinics to treat a wide variety of ailments including pain and inflammation, and accelerating tissue healing.
Importantly, CLT has been shown to be extremely safe and effective in the treatment of hundreds of nerve, muscle, and joint conditions. Efficacy rates in excess of 90% are routinely achieved. It is non-invasive and, when compared with acupuncture or surgical interventions, provides results with a few treatments depending on the severity of the condition, can be used to treat all patients regardless of existing conditions.
How does it work?
The latest and most advanced CLT systems employ laser diodes and use pulsing drive frequencies to allow this laser light to penetrate much deeper below the skin surface than would be possible with a continuous wave approach. There are two main wavelengths of laser light that are most commonly employed to stimulate biological processes in our cells: Visible red laser light, preferably in the 660 nm range and Near Infrared (“NIR”) laser light preferably in the 905 nm range. The advantage of using red and NIR laser light is that it is able to penetrate more deeply through human tissue (up to 5” in tissue depth) while still having sufficient electron volt energy to induce photochemical changes in cells.
At Rice Family Chiropractic we’re proud to take a holistic and evidence-based approach to wellness. We are now providing Cold Laser Therapy (CLT) as an added wellness option to our patients. We find this is the best way to keep ourselves and our family healthy in all aspects of our lives—physical, mental and spiritual. If you’re curious about adding Cold Laser Therapy to your treatment plan, please don’t hesitate to call or email or ask either Dr. James or Dr. Erin during your next visit. I have had such success with cold laser therapy at rice family chiropractic, I am an active runner who struggles with shin splints. The laser has helped take away the pain making running easier.
